Labor Government Takes Office In South Australia

March 5, 2002

Mike Rann, Premier of South Australia Mike Rann has been sworn in as the Labor Premier of South Australia, following the defeat of the Kerin Liberal government in the House of Assembly this afternoon. Rann's election completes a clean sweep of the eight State and Territory governments by the ALP. The Howard federal government is now the only non-Labor government in the country.

Rann's appointment comes nearly one month after the election which returned 23 Labor members, 20 Liberals, 1 National and 3 Independents in the 47-seat House of Assembly. Peter Lewis, the independent member for Hammond was elected Speaker when Parliament convened earlier today. Another independent, Dr. Bob Such, abstained from voting on the confidence motion, ensuring the defeat of the Kerin government.
