Election 2001: Who Won What?
November 11, 2001
Counting continues today in House of Representatives electorates. Only a handful of seats remain in doubt and these will remain so until 10 days have elapsed and all postal and absentee votes have been received and counted.
This was the make-up of the House of Representatives prior to the election:

Following redistributions in Tasmania, New South Wales, South Australia and the Northern Territory, the Parliament was increased from 148 seats to 150. A number of seats were then notionally Labor or Liberal depending on boundary changes. Click here for more details of the changes.
At this stage it seems that the following movements have occurred:
- Victoria: Ballarat won by the ALP from the Liberals.
- Tasmania: No change.
- New South Wales:
- ALP losses: Parramatta, Macarthur (both notional Labor, lost to Liberals), Paterson (notional Liberal, won by Liberals)
- NP losses: Farrer (lost to Liberals), New England (lost to independent)
- In doubt: Dobell (ALP behind to Liberals),
- Queensland:
- ALP losses: Ryan, Dickson
- NP losses: Kennedy (lost to independent)
- In doubt: Hinkler (NP behind to ALP)
- South Australia:
- In doubt: Adelaide (Liberal behind to ALP)
- Western Australia:
- In doubt: Canning (ALP behind to Liberals)
- A.C.T. - no change
- Northern Territory - no change (one seat each following redistribution)
Thus the state of the parties in the new House is:

If the coalition were to win all 4 doubtful seats (Canning, Hinkler, Dobell and Adelaide) the government would have 82 seats and a majority of 14 (13 on the floor of the House, after the provision of a Speaker).
If the ALP won all 4 seats, the government would have a majority of 6 (5 on the floor of the House).
Splitting the difference, the government is likely to have a majority of 10, an increase of 2 over its 1998 result.
