Labor To Govern In ACT

The ALP will form government in the Australian Capital Territory, following the election held on October 20. Results in the election were finalised today, giving the ALP 8 seats, the Liberal Party 7, Democrats 1, and Greens 1. The Greens member has pledged her support to the ALP, giving it a majority.
The new Chief Minister will be Jon Stanhope (pictured). He was first elected to the Assembly at the last election in 1998.
The ACT has a 17-member single chamber Parliament of 3 electorates, each elected by the proportional representation system.

- Simon Corbell (ALP)
- Ted Quinlan (ALP)
- Katy Gallagher (ALP)
- Gary Humphries (Lib)
- Greg Cornwell (Lib)
- Helen Cross (Lib)
- Kerrie Tucker (Greens)
The outcome of the election means that the ALP has now won 4 state and territory elections this year. It won in Western Australia in February, was re-elected in Queensland in February and won in the Northern Territory in August.
The ALP won election in Victoria in 1999 and re-election in New South Wales. It won government in Tasmania in 1998.
The coalition has not won an election in Australia since the October 1998 Federal Election.
