Labor Government Elected In Northern Territory

August 22, 2001

Clare Martin, First ALP Chief Minister of the Northern Territory Counting in the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly seat of Millner today has given victory to the ALP candidate, Matthew Bonson. With about 70 postal votes still to be counted, Bonson has a lead of about the same number and is therefore unbeatable.

Bonson's victory ensures that the ALP will hold 13 of the 25 seats in the unicameral Parliament.

Chief Minister Denis Burke will see the Northern Territory Administrator (the territory equivalent of Governor) tomorrow at which time he is expected to surrender his commission. Labor's Clare Martin will likely be called and sworn as Chief Minister by the end of the day.
