Big Swing To Labor In Northern Territory; CLP Government Could Lose
August 18, 2001
8.00pm AEST - The Northern Territory election has produced a large swing to Labor, threatening the defeat of the Country Liberal government for the first time since 1974.
The swing against the CLP is occurring in the northern suburbs of Darwin and averaging more than 6%. A uniform swing of 8% is required for the ALP to take government.
The former Labor federal member for the Northern Territory, Warren Snowdon, appearing on ABC television, has claimed victory in the electorates of Karama, Milner, Casuarina, Sanderson, Johnston and Nightcliff.
In Alice Springs it appears that Loraine Braham, the disendorsed CLP member contesting Braitling as an independent, will win on Labor preferences.
A loss of 6 seats to Labor would see Denis Burke's government lose its majority in the 25-seat Parliament.
