Bill Borthwick, Liberal Party Politician, Dies, 76

August 1, 2001

The death of Bill Borthwick, the former Liberal Party member for the State electorate of Monbulk, has been announced. Mr. Borthwick was 76.

A member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly between 1960 and 1982 when he lost his seat, Borthwick was regarded as a moderate Liberal of the old school, respected by members of the ALP.

Borthwick served as Conservation Minister under Sir Henry Bolte and Rupert Hamer and Deputy Premier under Lindsay Thompson. Following the resignation of Premier Rupert (Dick) Hamer in 1981, Borthwick came within an ace of becoming leader, losing to Thompson.
