Aston By-Election To Be Held On July 14
May 24, 2001
The Aston by-election will be held on July 14. The date was announced today by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Neil Andrew.
The by-election has been caused by the sudden death of the sitting Liberal member, Peter Nugent.
The ALP needs a swing of 4.24% to take the seat.
The by-election will be the first electoral test of this week's Federal Budget.
The ALP's candidate, Kieran Boland, will face the Liberal Party's Chris Pearce. Earlier reports that the Liberal Party hoped Mrs. Nugent would run were dashed when it was discovered that she had dual British citizenship. Under Section 44 of the Constitution, this disqualifies her from election.
