Best Olympic Games Ever: Samaranch

October 1, 2000

Sydney Harbour Bridge A stunning fireworks display brought the Games of the 27th Olympiad to a close in Sydney tonight. International Olympic Committee President, Juan Antonio Samaranch, proclaimed the 2000 Games as the "best ever".

Earlier, Michael Knight, Minister for the Olympics in the New South Wales Labor Government, paid tribute to Samaranch, who retires next year, and praised the volunteers who assisted in the running of the Games.

Reconciliation, the political undercurrent of these Games, appeared again in the closing ceremony when Peter Garrett and other members of Midnight Oil wore t-shirts emblazoned with the word "sorry". They were followed on stage by the Aboriginal band Yothu Yindi.

In another important development tonight, it has been revealed that Channel 7 chief, Kerry Stokes, has paid $80,000 in an internet auction to keep Fatso, the Fat-Arsed Wombat, in network hands. The wombat, the brainchild of "The Dream" team of H. G. Nelson and Rampaging Roy Slaven, became a cult figure during the Games.
