The First Australian Federal Government
Edmund Barton - 1901-03 Alfred Deakin - 1903-04
Australia's first Federal Government took office on January 1, 1901, preparatory to the first Federal Elections on 29-30 March 1901. The new Protectionist Government, led first by Edmund Barton and then Alfred Deakin, survived in office until April 27, 1904, when the Australian Labor Party briefly took office.
